By Zoila Palma: For this year’s International Day of Zero Waste, attention is turning to food, highlighting the scale of global waste and the need for more sustainable consumption.
Each year, roughly 1 billion tonnes of edible food—nearly one-fifth of all available to consumers—is discarded, creating significant social and environmental consequences, the United Nations report.
The day is observed on March 30 each year and brings awareness to food waste and solutions.
Households account for about 60 percent of this waste, with the remainder arising primarily from retail and food service sectors due to inefficiencies in production, distribution, and consumption. Experts say addressing the issue requires redesigning food systems toward a circular model that prioritizes efficiency, resilience, and sustainability.
The United Nations say that Governments, businesses, and consumers all have key roles to play.
Policymakers can integrate food waste prevention into national climate, biodiversity, and circular economy strategies, while businesses are encouraged to set measurable reduction targets and innovate across supply chains.
