By Zoila Palma: Today, the world celebrates the International Day of the Girl Child under the theme “The Girl I Am, The Change I Lead: Girls on the Frontlines of Crisis.”
Shaped through consultations with girls’ organizations, UN partners, and girls themselves, the 2025 theme highlights the power, leadership, and resilience of girls who are driving change in their communities—fighting for climate justice, gender equality, and an end to violence.
As the world marks 30 years since the Beijing Declaration, the global blueprint for gender equality, this year’s observance is a call to action to recognize girls not just for the challenges they face, but for the solutions they bring.
Despite their contributions, millions of girls continue to face barriers: 133 million are out of school, nearly one in four adolescent girls has experienced partner violence, and gender stereotypes continue to limit their opportunities and voices.
The United Nations urges everyone to stand with girls and support their leadership, by amplifying their voices, advocating for girl-led spaces, and pushing for policies that protect their rights.
Investing in girls—through education, safety, and equal opportunities—creates a more just and hopeful world for all. For girls aren’t waiting for change; they are leading it.
