By Zoila Palma: Special envoy for the Development of Families and Children Rosanna Briceño, joins the world as it observes the International Day of Sign Language, emphasizing the vital role of sign language in promoting equality and empowerment.
The Special Envoy highlighted that sign language is more than a communication tool—it is a cornerstone of identity, rights, and inclusion for Deaf communities.
Briceño called on all people to amplify the voices of Deaf individuals, advocate for sign language rights, and ensure these rights are protected every day.
The United Nations notes that the International Day of Sign Language provides an opportunity to support and safeguard the linguistic identity and cultural diversity of the world’s Deaf population.
Globally, over 70 million deaf people rely on more than 300 distinct sign languages, with over 80% living in developing countries.
Sign languages are recognized as fully developed natural languages, distinct from spoken languages, and include an international sign language used for global communication in informal and professional settings.
