International day for the eradication of Poverty highlights need to end social and institutional maltreatment

By Zoila Palma:  The world marks the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty on October 17, a day that underscores the fight against poverty as a matter of dignity, justice, and belonging—not just income.

The 2025 theme, “Ending social and institutional maltreatment by ensuring respect and effective support for families,” calls for putting the most vulnerable first and creating systems that help families stay together, thrive, and shape their own futures.

Many families living in poverty face stigma, judgment, and punitive treatment in the very institutions meant to help them—schools, welfare offices, clinics, and child protection systems.

Single mothers, Indigenous families, and marginalized groups often report mistrust and lack of agency, with some even facing poverty-driven family separations that cause lasting emotional harm.

The United Nations note that this year’s observance urges governments and institutions to shift from control to care, surveillance to support, and top-down to co-created solutions—prioritizing respect, trust, and collaboration in social services.

Globally, over 690 million people live in extreme poverty on less than $2.15 a day, while nearly half the world survives on under $6.85 daily.

Around 1.1 billion people experience acute multidimensional poverty, suffering deprivations in health, education, and living standards. The burden is worsened by climate change and conflict, which disproportionately affect the poorest communities.
