By Zoila Palma: The International Court of Justice (ICJ) held hearings from November 24 to 26, 2025, to consider Guatemala’s request to intervene in the case between Belize and Honduras regarding sovereignty over the Sapodilla Cayes.
Guatemala argued that its participation was necessary to protect what it described as its claimed interests in the matter.
Honduras firmly opposed the request, asserting that the Court’s procedures do not grant Guatemala a right to intervene and warning that allowing it would introduce a new dispute into the proceedings.
Belize emphasized the importance of efficiency and coordination, noting that the timely administration of justice is essential as the Court manages multiple related cases.
The ICJ will now deliberate before issuing its decision on Guatemala’s application.
Belize was represented at the hearings by Ambassador Assad Shoman and the legal team from the Office of the Agent.
