By Zoila Palma: International Anti-Corruption Day, observed each year on 9 December, highlights the global fight against corruption and the urgent need to strengthen integrity in public and private life.
This year’s campaign places a special focus on young people, recognizing the 1.9 billion youth worldwide as crucial allies in confronting one of the most damaging challenges facing societies today.
The 2024–2025 theme, “Uniting with Youth Against Corruption,” encourages young leaders to raise awareness, share their experiences, and help design innovative solutions that protect their communities and shape a more transparent future.
The United Nations note that corruption remains a deeply rooted social, political, and economic threat that undermines democracy, slows development, and destabilizes governments across the globe.
It distorts elections, erodes the rule of law, drives away investment, and burdens citizens and small businesses with unnecessary obstacles designed to solicit bribes.
With corruption affecting countries at all income levels, the United Nations emphasizes that a just, equitable, and sustainable world is only possible when these harmful practices are confronted collectively.
Since the adoption of the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC) in 2003, 190 states have committed to upholding stronger accountability and governance standards—an achievement that reflects near-universal recognition of the problem.
The Convention, which entered into force in 2005, remains the world’s most comprehensive anti-corruption framework.
As it marks its 20th anniversary, UNDP, UNODC, and the Convention Secretariat continue to lead global efforts to build integrity and ensure that nations stay united against corruption, reaffirming that the fight requires the participation of every generation, especially the leaders of tomorrow.
