Interdicted police officer sentenced to two years for squeezing girl’s butt

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Twenty-seven-year-old interdicted police officer Melvin Canul spent his first night of a two-year sentence for sexual assault starting on Thursday. Canul, convicted for squeezing the buttocks of a 17-year-old student, was found guilty on Thursday morning in Belize City Magistrate’s Court by Chief Magistrate Jayani Wegodapola.

The incident occurred on September 12, 2023, at the Lopez Mateo Park Police Booth. The victim’s testimony was pivotal in securing the conviction. Despite Canul’s plea for leniency, citing his family responsibilities, the court sentenced him to two years, emphasizing that he should have known better as a serving police officer.

Canul had initially pleaded not guilty and was out on bail. He offered no defense during the trial and expressed no remorse, only requesting to see his family after the verdict.
