By Zoila Palma: In a proactive effort to strengthen national animal health disease prevention and control measures, the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) in collaboration with the Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA), and the International Regional Organisation for Agricultural Health (OIRSA) hosted a session on July 15th in Belmopan with veterinary professionals of the private sector, including the Veterinary Association of Belize (VAB).
The session focused on raising awareness and building capacity among private veterinary professionals to effectively manage and control the New World Screwworm (NWS).
NWS is a parasitic infestation (myiasis) that poses significant threats to animal health in the region since its outbreak in Panama in July of 2023 and in Belize since December of 2024.
Participants received comprehensive updates on the status of the outbreak, prevention and control measures implemented to date, including an overview of national regulations implemented by BAHA.
The workshop also provided detailed guidance on the recently established OIRSA regional standardised protocol for the detection, treatment, and control of NWS in companion animals such as dogs and cats.
The well-attended session brought together private veterinarians and their veterinary paraprofessionals from across the country, including the Cayes, reinforcing the commitment of Belize’s veterinary community to collaborate with national and regional partners to protect animal health and welfare, safeguard livelihoods, and manage and eventually eradicate this harmful pest.
