By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) has welcomed Belize’s recent accession to the Inter-American Convention on Protecting the Human Rights of Older Persons, making Belize the 12th country to join the treaty.
Belize deposited its instrument of accession on December 16, 2024.
Adopted in 2015 by OAS Member States, the convention is the first legally binding treaty focused on the rights of older persons, aiming to promote their inclusion and participation in society.
The IACHR had previously encouraged Belize to ratify the treaty during a technical visit in October 2024.
Belize joins 11 other countries, including Argentina, Mexico, and Uruguay, in committing to measures that ensure older people’s rights to health, security, and active participation in all aspects of life.
The IACHR urges other OAS Member States to ratify the convention and offers its support in implementing it.
