By Zoila Palma:  The Institute of Archaeology (NICH) is urging the public to join in protecting our archaeological sites and refraining from marking on them.

“Section 62 (1) states:

(A) 𝒊𝒕 𝒊𝒔 𝒊𝒍𝒍𝒆𝒈𝒂𝒍 𝒕𝒐 𝒘𝒊𝒍𝒍𝒇𝒖𝒍𝒍𝒚 𝒅𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒐𝒚, 𝒅𝒂𝒎𝒂𝒈𝒆 𝒐𝒓 𝒅𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒃 𝒂𝒏𝒚 𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒊𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝒎𝒐𝒏𝒖𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝒐𝒓 𝒊𝒏 𝒂𝒏𝒚 𝒘𝒂𝒚 𝒎𝒂𝒓𝒌𝒔 𝒐𝒓 𝒅𝒆𝒇𝒂𝒄𝒆 𝒂𝒏𝒚 𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒊𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝒎𝒐𝒏𝒖𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕.

𝑨𝒏𝒚 𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒐𝒏 𝒇𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒅 𝒈𝒖𝒊𝒍𝒕𝒚 𝒐𝒇 𝒔𝒖𝒄𝒉 𝒐𝒇𝒇𝒆𝒏𝒔𝒆 𝒐𝒓 𝒊𝒏𝒅𝒖𝒄𝒆𝒔 𝒐𝒓 𝒂𝒕𝒕𝒆𝒎𝒑𝒕 𝒕𝒐 𝒄𝒂𝒖𝒔𝒆 𝒐𝒓 𝒊𝒏𝒅𝒖𝒄𝒆 𝒂𝒏𝒚 𝒐𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓 𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒐𝒏 𝒕𝒐 𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒎𝒊𝒕 𝒔𝒖𝒄𝒉 𝒐𝒇𝒇𝒆𝒏𝒔𝒆 𝒊𝒔 𝒍𝒊𝒂𝒃𝒍𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝒂 𝒇𝒊𝒏𝒆 𝒖𝒑 𝒕𝒐 $75,000 𝒐𝒓 𝒕𝒐 𝒊𝒎𝒑𝒓𝒊𝒔𝒐𝒏𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒂 𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒎 𝒐𝒇 5 𝒚𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒔,” the IA noted.

The IA reminded all Belizeans that ancient monuments and archaeological sites are priceless windows into Belize’s past.

“Every carving, structure, and artifact carries thousands of years of history, and graffiti permanently damages these treasures,” the IA said.

Visitors are reminded to refrain from marking any part of an archaeological site.

You are urged to respect signage and follow the guidance of our rangers and site staff.

Help us preserve these sites so future generations can learn from and appreciate them.

Let’s work together to safeguard Belize’s cultural heritage.
