By Zoila Palma: The Belize Historic Sugar Mill Project is a collaborative initiative bringing together the Institute of Archaeology, the University of Belize, and Northwestern State University.
The project is being launched with the aim to document, map, and research Belize’s colonial-era sugar mills.
“As one of the few projects dedicated to colonial archaeology in Belize, it marks an important step in preserving and better understanding this aspect of our nation’s history,” the Institute said.
The project has been in development for several years and officially commenced on July 16, 2026, with the signing of a data-sharing agreement between the three partner institutions, with an MOU signed by Dr. Melissa Badillo for the Institute of Archaeology, Dr. Tommy Hailey for Northwestern State University, and Egbert Irving for the University of Belize.
The team will map selected historic sugar mills across Belize using LiDAR technology and aerial photography.
The data collected will be processed into detailed 3D LiDAR and photogrammetric models that will support future research, heritage management, and educational initiatives.
