By Zoila Palma:  The Institute for Social and Cultural Research (ISCR) conducted an inventory training workshop in Sarteneja on November 16, 2025, as part of UNESCO’s initiative, “Capacity Building for Safeguarding Intangible Cultural Heritage in Emergencies in Small Island Developing States in the Pacific and the Caribbean.”

The session aimed to strengthen local capacity to document living heritage and explore how traditional knowledge supports community resilience during disasters.

Residents participated by sharing insights on life in the coastal village and reflecting on how their cultural practices shape identity in northern Belize.

During the field visit, the ISCR team observed a range of traditional activities, including the preparation of pib, preserved fish techniques used by fisherfolk, fish panade making, boatbuilding traditions, and oral histories that trace Sarteneja’s rich cultural past. The group also documented traditional fish traps that have sustained families across generations.

ISCR expressed gratitude to the Sarteneja Village Council, residents, and project funders for their support in advancing Belize’s living heritage inventory and strengthening disaster risk reduction efforts.

The initiative is supported by the UNESCO Kingston Office for the Caribbean and funded through the UNESCO Japanese Funds-in-Trust.
