By Zoila Palma:  On February 26, 2026, the Institute for Social and Cultural Research (ISCR) successfully concluded its Safeguarding African Heritage Workshop.

The workshop culminated in a series of strategic recommendations from participants dedicated to strengthening the safeguarding of our shared African cultural heritage.

During the session, participants explored methodologies for identifying and documenting heritage elements, while assessing both the challenges and opportunities facing our region.

“Belize continues to make meaningful progress in this area through the development of the Belize Living Heritage website, a growing national repository. We reaffirmed our commitment to updating heritage inventories in collaboration with African Descendant communities across the country,” ISCR noted.

The workshop concluded with a community visit to Gales Point Village, offering participants a first-hand experience of coconut oil and powda bun making, showcasing heritage transmission while ending the evening with a Sambai demonstrating safeguarding practices in action.

“This engagement underscored the vital role communities play in sustaining living traditions. We look forward to continued collaboration and partnership with our communities who continue to be stewards of our living heritage,” ISCR added.

The Institute for Social and Cultural Research extended gratitude to CECC/SICA, CRESPIAL, UNESCO, the National Garifuna Council, the National Kriol Council, the Battle of the Drums Secretariat, and community representatives for their invaluable contribution, dedicated support and partnership.
