By Zoila Palma: On November 2, 2025, the Institute for Social and Cultural Research (ISCR), a branch of the National Institute of Culture and History (NICH), continued its efforts under the UNESCO project “Capacity Building for Safeguarding Intangible Cultural Heritage in Emergencies in Small Island Developing States in the Pacific and the Caribbean.”

The initiative aims to help communities preserve their living heritage while building resilience in the face of natural disasters and emergencies.

As part of the project, ISCR held a community gathering in Gales Point Village, bringing residents together to explore the significance of living heritage and its role in disaster preparedness and recovery.

Discussions focused on three key themes: understanding what constitutes living heritage, examining the connections between disasters and cultural traditions, and identifying ways communities can document and protect their intangible heritage.

The session highlighted how traditional knowledge, cultural expressions, and community practices can guide collective responses to crises and support long-term recovery. By documenting and safeguarding these elements, Gales Point residents are actively contributing to the preservation of Belize’s cultural identity while strengthening community resilience.

ISCR extended its gratitude to the Gales Point Village Council, local residents, and the National Kriol Council for their collaboration.

Funded by the UNESCO Japan Funds-in-Trust, the project underscores the power of living heritage as a vital tool for sustainability and resilience across the Caribbean.
