Statement by Special Envoy for the Development of Families and Children Rossana Briceno
As we celebrate International Women’s Day, let us reflect on the sacrifices, hard work, and progress that women have made in our society. Belize, like many countries around the world, is home to extraordinary women who have made and continue to make significant contributions to our Belizean story. From our early history to the present day, women have played pivotal roles in shaping our nation’s culture, traditions, politics, infrastructure, and economy.
This year’s theme, “Inspire Inclusion: Count Her In”, serves as a call to action for all of us to recognize and ensure that women are included and given a space in all aspects of our society. It is a reminder that women’s voices, ideas, and perspectives matter and should be welcomed in all aspects of life. It’s about recognizing that women, like men, are an integral part of our country and communities and, therefore, must be fully represented, included, respected, and appreciated.
Still, we can not talk about inclusion without addressing the challenges that women face in their daily lives. Despite the significant strides made in recent years to promote gender equality, at home and across the world, women’s rights and opportunities are still limited, with women being more likely to be the target of discrimination, violence, and inequality. Although these obstacles threaten women’s progress, we have seen the power of women’s voices and their ability to break barriers, shatter stereotypes, and change the world.
Therefore, this Women’s Month, let us honor the legacies of the women who have come before us by taking meaningful action to inspire and empower the next generation of women. Let us commit to creating workplaces, communities, and spaces where women are encouraged and supported to embrace their talents and potential. Let us be an ally to all women by challenging stereotypes and biases wherever we encounter them.
As a nation, we must commit to creating a more equitable and just society, where all women have the opportunity to contribute fully to the development of Belize. Together, let us inspire inclusion, count her in, and work towards a brighter future for all Belizeans.
Happy International Women’s Day!
