By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Serious questions regarding accountability and security within the Belize Police Department are being raised after more than $20,000 in cash exhibits vanished directly from the Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) in Belize City.
The missing money, which dates back to a 2023 police seizure, was discovered unaccounted for earlier this year following a routine internal audit. The revelation has forced the department to turn its investigative lens inward on its own officers.
ASP Stacy Smith confirmed that the Professional Standards Branch is now reviewing the matter and taking the lead on the delicate internal investigation.
“It’s an ongoing investigation. The members of the Professional Standards Branch are reviewing the matter,” ASP Smith said, confirming that multiple statements have been recorded from police staff as they seek to determine exactly when and how the money was breached.
The scandal has already brought administrative fallout. Sources reveal that the Officer Commanding the CIB has been stripped of their command and transferred to another unit as accountability measures are enforced.
With over $20,000 missing from what should be one of the most secure rooms in the police department, critics are calling for stricter protocols on how cash and physical evidence are secured.
The Professional Standards Branch continues its review to determine if criminal charges will be brought against any internal personnel.
