By Breaking Belize News Staff: An inmate at the Belize Central Prison was shot this morning after attempting to escape during recreation time.
CEO of the Belize Central Prison, Virgilio Murillo, confirmed the incident happened around 9:20 a.m. when an officer began unlocking cells for inmate recreation. Shortly after, 30-year-old Nyrere Parchue was spotted in a restricted area behind one of the convicted buildings, moving toward a guard tower.
Tower officers reported issuing multiple verbal commands for Parchue to stop and return to his building, but he instead ran toward the moat and jumped into the water. Warning shots were fired from multiple towers as the alarm for an escape attempt was raised.
Parchue allegedly climbed the perimeter fence and reached the top before one tower officer fired, striking him. Prison staff retrieved him from the area with apparent gunshot wounds to the head and neck.
The prison’s medical team stabilized Parchue before he was transported by ambulance to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, where he arrived alive.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
