By Zoila Palma: The Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB) reported that consumer prices rose by an average of 0.8% in August 2025 compared to the same month last year.
The All-Items Consumer Price Index stood at 120.7, up from 119.7 in August 2024, reflecting modest national inflation.
The biggest contributors were increases in housing, utilities, gas, and food, while declines in transport and communication helped offset overall costs.
Housing-related expenses were up 2.4% year-on-year, fueled by higher home rental rates and rising liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) prices.
The average cost of a 100-pound cylinder of LPG jumped by $12.24, from $117.80 in August 2024 to $130.04 in August 2025.
Rental prices also climbed 1.7% over the same period, adding pressure to household budgets.
Meanwhile, food and non-alcoholic beverages rose 1.6%, with price hikes across cereal products such as bread and bakery goods (2.2%) and fresh meats including pork, beef, and poultry (3.1%).
Non-alcoholic beverages saw a sharper 4.4% increase, led by purified water (6.4%), soft drinks (3%), and fruit and vegetable juices (7.9%).
