By Aaron Humes: The latest month-over-month inflation rates have shown a slight decline in consumer prices across the board, with notable discrepancies among various municipalities. The overall average indicated a marginal decrease of 0.5 percent in consumer prices from December 2025 to January 2026.

The most significant shifts were observed in the Transport sector, where prices dropped by 3.1 percent. This decline was primarily attributed to decreases in motor vehicle fuel prices. Other major categories, however, saw little change, signifying a relatively stable market in those areas.

Punta Gorda Town emerged as the municipality with the highest inflation rate for January 2026, recording a 2.6 percent increase. Residents in this area faced above-average price hikes on essential goods and services. Specific categories affected included food items like cereal products, meats, and fish, as well as services from restaurants and cafés. Other notable increases were seen in school uniforms, personal care products, and certain domestic services.

On the other end of the spectrum, Orange Walk Town reported a deflationary trend with a -1.9 percent inflation rate for the same month. Inhabitants of this municipality enjoyed price decreases in several key areas, most notably fuel and various food products, including tomatoes, carrots, and watermelons. However, an increase in the costs associated with doctor’s visits and maintenance services for homes, including carpentry and masonry, offset some of the relief provided by lower prices in other categories.
