By Aaron Humes: Inez Sanchez, a renowned educator, public servant, and historian, has died at the age of 92. Sanchez played a pivotal role in shaping Belize’s education system, and is also remembered for his contribution to the design of the national flag.
Born on September 12, 1932, in Caledonia, Corozal District, Sanchez began his teaching career at the age of 14. He rose through the ranks to become Belize’s Chief Education Officer in 1978, championing advancements in preschool, special, and vocational education. Sanchez was later the first to teach Belizean history at the University of Belize.
Sanchez’s most enduring legacy is his contribution to the design of the Belizean flag. In 2014, he shared the story of how the design was conceived as part of a national competition, mentioning that supporters of both major political parties were insistent that they be represented with the new flag. The design was ultimately the Belize Coat of Arms on a royal blue field with two red stripes added at the top and bottom. Sanchez said that when a Belizean sees a national flag anywhere, they should be able to recognize it as representative of them. He is co-credited with then-Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education Everal Waight.
Sanchez’s passing has been met with an outpouring of tributes and condolences from across the country including by the Ministry of Education. His funeral arrangements will be announced later.
