By Horace Palacio: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrapped up a historic three-day visit to Guyana, marking the first visit by an Indian leader in 56 years. The trip underscored India’s commitment to deepening political and economic ties with the Caribbean region, including Belize, a key member of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).
Modi co-chaired the second India-CARICOM Summit with Grenada’s Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell, joined by leaders from 11 member states and representatives from Belize, Jamaica, and St. Kitts and Nevis. Discussions focused on advancing CARICOM’s priorities in areas such as healthcare, climate resilience, agriculture, and renewable energy. Modi announced significant initiatives, including technical training programs, agricultural innovation, and support for renewable energy projects.
The summit reinforced India’s commitment to addressing issues of regional concern, such as energy security, sustainable development, and women’s empowerment. Modi emphasized that the collaboration was built on CARICOM’s needs, highlighting India’s support during the COVID-19 pandemic, when it donated vaccines and medical supplies to member states.
During bilateral talks with Guyanese President Irfaan Ali, Modi signed agreements spanning energy, healthcare, defense, and agriculture, further strengthening India-Guyana ties. Guyana’s burgeoning oil industry, which drove its GDP growth to 43% in 2023, is of strategic interest to India, which seeks to diversify its energy sources.
Modi’s visit also celebrated the cultural and historical ties between India and the Indo-Guyanese community, which makes up over 40% of Guyana’s population. Indo-Guyanese leaders, including Guyana’s President Irfaan Ali and Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo, reflect the enduring legacy of Indian heritage in the region.
The visit was capped with Modi receiving Guyana’s and Dominica’s highest national honors, alongside an announcement by Barbados to confer its own highest award on him. CARICOM leaders expressed gratitude for India’s engagement, commending Modi’s proposals as a roadmap for strengthening the India-CARICOM partnership.
Belize stands to benefit from India’s outreach, with initiatives in healthcare, capacity building, and renewable energy aligning with regional priorities. Modi’s visit not only strengthened India’s ties with Guyana but also cemented its role as a key partner for CARICOM nations.
