Independent senators warn against telecom monopoly

By Zoila Palma: The 4 Independent Senators have jointly raised strong objections to the proposed acquisition of Speednet Communications Limited (SMART) by Belize Telemedia Limited (BTL), stating that they were never consulted about the proposed transaction.

In a joint statement issued today, Senators Kevin Herrera, Glenfield Denison, Rev. Louis Wade and Janelle Chanona said they are seeking information from key authorities regarding the proposed acquisition.

The senators said no representative of BTL or any third party acting on the company’s behalf has contacted them or their respective organizations to discuss the acquisition.

They stated categorically that “No invitation from Belize Telemedia Limited (BTL), verbal or written, has ever been received by any of the Independent Senators or their respective organizations.”

As part of their efforts to obtain greater transparency, the Independent Senators said they have each signed and sent letters to the Chair of the Public Utilities Commission, the Attorney General, the Chairman of BTL’s Board and the Office of the Prime Minister.

The letters seek information they consider relevant to the proposed acquisition of Speednet Communications.

“The Independent Senators have signed and sent separate letters…to directly request information related and relevant to the proposed acquisition of Speednet Communications (SMART),” the statement said.

The senators also made clear their position on the potential impact of the transaction on Belize’s telecommunications sector.

They warned against concentrating the country’s telecommunications services under a single provider, stating, “We believe any decision to transform the telecommunications landscape into a monopoly is regressive.”
