By Aaron Humes: Police are investigating a fatal road traffic accident in northern Belize.
The ongoing investigation commenced on Tuesday, November 4, at 6:48 p.m., when police responded to a report of a road traffic accident on the Old Northern Highway, Santa Martha Village, Orange Walk District.
Upon arrival, they observed the motionless body of a man lying on the side of the road with various injuries to his body. About 20 feet away, they observed a Mack dump truck.
Initial investigation reveals that about 6:30 p.m., 36-year-old Nelson Osman Pech, a Belizean truck driver of Santa Martha Village, had parked the dump truck off the edge of the road and exited the vehicle. Upon returning, he drove off but was alerted by his brother to stop. After exiting the truck, he realized that he had run over 67-year-old Julio Flota, a Belizean labourer of Santa Marta Village.
Flota was transported to the Northern Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
