By Zoila Palma: Belize’s total merchandise imports fell by 2.7% in May 2025, totaling $244.5 million, down from $251.2 million in May 2024, according to the latest data from the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB).
The decline was largely driven by a significant reduction in fuel imports.
The ‘Mineral Fuels and Lubricants’ category plunged by $13.6 million, from $49.7 million to $36.1 million, as diesel imports were cut in half compared to the same period last year.
Imports of regular gasoline and lubricating oils were also down.
Other notable decreases came from:
- Beverages and Tobacco, which dropped $2 million to $3.2 million, due to lower imports of cigarettes and cigars
- Chemical Products, down $1.7 million to $24.1 million, following reduced purchases of insecticides and biodiesel
- Machinery and Transport Equipment, which declined by $1.2 million to $56 million, with fewer imports of four-cylinder vehicles, power cables, and air conditioners
Despite these reductions, the ‘Manufactured Goods’ category recorded a notable increase, partly offsetting the overall decline in imports.
