By Zoila Palma: Data from the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB) showed a decrease in imports of 10.9% or $29.7 million compared to January 2024, when imports totaled $272.2 million.
The “Food and Live Animals” category saw a significant rise, increasing by $3.8 million, from $28.7 million in January 2024 to $32.4 million in January 2025.
This growth was driven by higher imports of orange concentrate and various grocery items, including coffee.
Additionally, imports for the “Commercial Free Zones” rose by $0.6 million, reflecting higher imports of cigarettes and handbags.
On the other hand, most commodity categories recorded decreases, with the largest drop coming from “Machinery and Transport Equipment,” which fell by $28.5 million.
This decline was largely attributed to a high-value industrial generator imported in January 2024, inflating the figures for that month.
