“Immediate removal”: unions turn up heat on BTL chairman

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): The National Trade Union Congress of Belize is demanding the immediate removal of BTL Chairman Mark Lizarraga, calling it their first and most urgent demand.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, NTUCB President Ella Waight said the position is based on a loss of confidence.

“We believe the chairman has not been sufficiently honest, transparent and forthcoming with the BTL workers and the Belizean public,” she said.

Waight pointed to his handling of business lost to SMART, his advocacy to pay $90 million to cable companies, and his insistence on going through with the SMART and SpeedNet purchase.

“And the timeline is immediate. Immediate removal,” she said.

The union body also named three other board members whose roles it wants reviewed, Moises Cal, Arturo Lizarraga, and Eric Eusey, who represents small shareholders. Waight said the NTUCB will eventually call for their removal as well.

Other demands include mandatory channeling of all government telecommunications business through BTL, and restructuring the Public Utilities Commission so that four of seven commissioners are nominated by social partners.

“Taxpayers must not subsidize private corporate profits,” Waight said.
