By Zoila Palma: Tropical Storm Imelda is strengthening as it moves northward near the northwestern Bahamas, bringing tropical storm conditions to islands including Eleuthera, the Abacos, and Grand Bahama. As of Monday morning, the storm was located about 35 miles north of Great Abaco Island, with maximum sustained winds near 60 mph and gusts up to 83 mph recorded in Treasure Cay. Forecasters warn that Imelda could become a hurricane as early as Tuesday.
The system is expected to shift east-northeast by Tuesday, moving away from the Bahamas and the southeastern United States while drawing closer to Bermuda. A Tropical Storm Watch is already in effect for Bermuda, and meteorologists caution that a Hurricane Watch may be issued later today. Residents of the island are urged to closely monitor the storm’s progress and prepare for worsening conditions.
Meanwhile, Hurricane Humberto, a powerful Category 4 storm, continues to churn in the Atlantic about 340 miles south-southwest of Bermuda. With maximum sustained winds near 145 mph, Humberto is forecast to pass west and then north of the island between Tuesday and Wednesday. Dangerous surf and rip currents are expected along Bermuda’s shores as well as much of the U.S. East Coast, with forecasters warning that Humberto will remain a major hurricane into Tuesday despite gradual weakening.
