By Zoila Palma: Dagoberto Suazo has been named one of the Leaders of Rurality of the Americas by the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) for his decades-long work improving Honduran coffee production and exports.
Suazo, head of the Central de Cooperativas Cafetaleras de Honduras, has championed small coffee farmers since the 1990s, after studying in the Netherlands and realizing the potential of Honduran coffee on the global stage. His efforts led to the founding of a major coffee cooperative in 1997 and a push toward organic, high-quality production.
Suazo also helped establish Honduras’s first coffee tasters’ school, which has trained over 300 professionals in quality control. He continues to advocate for direct exports by small farmers and better access to financing, calling coffee a key engine for national rural development.
IICA will present Suazo with its “Soul of Rurality” award in recognition of his lasting impact on agriculture and rural life in the region.
