By Breaking Belize News Staff: A growing batch of leaked government payment records is placing Minister Oscar Mira and members of his family under intense public scrutiny, after documents circulating publicly appeared to show almost $400,000 in payments to Brian Mira’s company in a single day.
The latest records reportedly show payments totaling $389,995.85 to MP Farms Company Ltd., a company linked to Brian Mira, who is identified in public reports as a brother of Minister Mira. The payments were reportedly processed on September 25, 2025, through the Government of Belize’s SmartStream payment system.
The documents appear to show the payments being made through a series of invoices, raising questions over why the transactions were divided into smaller amounts. Public reports have noted that many of the payments to members of the Mira family were below $10,000, a figure that has triggered public concern over whether payments were structured to avoid additional layers of scrutiny or approval.
The Brian Mira payments are only the latest in what has become an avalanche of leaked records pointing to hundreds of thousands — and possibly millions — of dollars in government payments to businesses connected to the Mira family.
Previous reports have linked other Mira family members to government contracts and payments for supplies to state institutions, including the Belize Defence Force, Belize Coast Guard, Western Regional Hospital and other government entities. One set of records reportedly showed approximately $1.7 million in payments to Jenny Armstrong Mira for vegetables and other food supplies between 2020 and 2025.
The controversy has also been fueled by the public reaction from members of the Mira family and those close to them. Social media posts attributed to Eris Janet Mira, Brian Mira’s wife, have drawn criticism after she appeared to chastise members of the public questioning the family. One widely circulated post attributed to her stated, in effect, that if her “shine” bothered people, they should “cover” their eyes.
Jenny Mira has also come under criticism for comments circulating online that appeared to push back against those questioning the Miras. Critics have interpreted her comments as suggesting that persons who criticize or question the family should not expect financial assistance or support from them. Those remarks have added another layer to the public backlash, as many Belizeans argue that the issue is not personal charity, but the use of public funds and government contracts.
Minister Oscar Mira has denied any wrongdoing and has publicly insisted that he did not influence the awarding of contracts to his relatives. He has said that tenders are handled through established government processes and that he does not sit on procurement committees.
Mira has also denied having any role in how payments were processed, saying that payment arrangements are handled by government finance officials, not by ministers.
Still, the leaked records have fueled growing calls for answers, particularly because the payments involve close relatives of a sitting government minister. Critics say the issue is no longer only whether goods were supplied, but whether public procurement and payment systems allowed politically connected families to benefit from repeated government business without sufficient transparency.
Officials have defended some of the payments, saying large volumes of food and supplies are needed for state institutions such as the BDF and Coast Guard. However, the pattern, volume and structure of the payments have kept the controversy alive.
For background, the controversy intensified after Minister Mira made a police complaint against political activist Alberto August over a satirical social media post. August was later detained, prompting criticism from political opponents and on social media. Soon after, leaked SmartStream records began circulating publicly, with former Belmopan Area Representative John Saldivar among those releasing and highlighting documents online.
The government has not yet announced any formal independent investigation into the full scope of payments to businesses connected to the Mira family. As more SmartStream records continue to surface, pressure is mounting for a full accounting of how much money was paid, which ministries approved the purchases, what goods or services were delivered, and whether proper procurement rules were followed.
