If Belize is so bad, why stay?

By Horace Palacio: There is a strange phenomenon happening in Belize. Some expatriates come here for the sunshine, the sea, the culture, the lower cost of living, and the freedom this country offers. They build homes, enjoy the beaches, run businesses, and benefit from the opportunities Belize provides.

And then they spend their time criticizing Belize and Belizeans.

It is a strange contradiction.

Belize is not a perfect country. No country is. Belizeans themselves criticize their government, their systems, and their challenges every single day. That is normal. It is part of being invested in your country’s future. Belizeans have earned that right because this is their home, their history, and their struggle.

But there is something different when outsiders arrive, enjoy the benefits of the country, and then constantly lecture the people who built it about how everything is wrong.

Belize did not invite anyone under false pretenses. People come here by choice. They come because Belize offers something their own countries often no longer do: space, community, nature, freedom, and a slower pace of life. Those things are valuable, and they exist because Belizeans have preserved them.

Criticism is not the problem. Belizeans themselves are among the harshest critics of Belize. The difference is respect. Constructive ideas are welcome. Arrogance is not.

Belize is a developing nation with real challenges. Crime, cost of living, bureaucracy, infrastructure, and economic growth are constant topics of debate. Belizeans know these issues better than anyone. They live with them every day.

What Belize does not need are lectures from people who arrived yesterday explaining the country to the people who built it.

If someone chooses to live in Belize, they should understand something simple. Belize is not a project for outsiders to redesign. It is a sovereign country with its own culture, history, and identity. Those who live here should contribute positively, respect the society they joined, and understand that development takes time.

Belize welcomes visitors and investors. It welcomes people who want to be part of its growth. But respect must run both ways.

If you choose to live here, contribute. Build something. Support the community. Respect the people.

Because the irony is simple.

For all the complaints some people make, they are still here.

And that says more about Belize than any criticism ever could.
