By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Belize’s public service is set for a major upgrade, after the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) approved a loan of up to US$8 million, around BZ$16 million, to help modernise the country’s public sector, strengthen fiscal sustainability, and improve how the government manages its workforce and spending.
According to the IDB, the programme will be implemented by Belize’s Ministry of Public Service and Disaster Risk Management. It is designed to build a more efficient, transparent, and digitally connected public administration, with the government hoping the reforms will improve public services while creating greater financial flexibility for future national development.
The IDB noted that while Belize has made steady progress in improving its public finances, rising public sector wage costs continue to eat into the resources available for investments in areas like infrastructure, education, and healthcare. To help address this, the new programme will introduce an integrated Human Resources Management Information System, strengthen payroll oversight, and support reforms in workforce planning and employee compensation.
Beyond workforce management, the investment will also expand digital infrastructure, improve data management, and strengthen cybersecurity across government departments. These upgrades, the IDB says, are expected to support better decision-making, improve efficiency, and make public administration more responsive to the needs of citizens.
The benefits are expected to reach far and wide. Around 16,000 public employees stand to gain from improved digital systems, professional training, and more transparent employment practices. The programme will also encourage greater use of data to guide policy decisions across the public sector.
IDB Group Representative in Belize Karla González said the initiative will help the country build a stronger and more modern public service while supporting long-term economic development. The project carries a total value of US$9 million, or roughly BZ$18 million, made up of the US$8 million in IDB financing and US$1 million in local counterpart funding, and is to be implemented over a five-year disbursement period.
