As part of its 34th cycle of Caribbean Conferences—Conferencias Caribeñas 34—the Institute of Caribbean Studies at the University of Puerto Rico-Río Piedras (UPR-RP) invites the academic community and the general public to the lecture “Casa Pueblo: De batey a batey en la República Dominicana,” by Dr. Arturo Massol-Dey (Department of Biology, UPR-Mayagüez). The commentators will be Dr. Jacqueline Lyon (California State University) and Dr. Amín Pérez (Université du Québec à Montréal).

This event will take place on Thursday, February 29, from 1:00 to 3:30pm in Room 238 of the Ramón Emeterio Betances Building (REB 238), School of Social Sciences, UPR-RP.

Description: Casa Pueblo [a not-for-profit environmental and educational community-based organization in Adjuntas, Puerto Rico] established an intercommunity bridge of justice and alternative Caribbean development with Red Común Nacional Organizada de Ciudadanos/as Dominicanos/as—Organized National Common Network of Dominican Citizens—also known as Reconoci.do. This initiative led to the Adjuntas group’s energy revolution of two bateyes of Haitian sugarcane growers and Dominicans of Haitian descent in the Dominican Republic. In both communities, these photovoltaic oases were designed and installed with a freezer, entertainment area, equipment charging area, and solar spotlights as an emblem for social transformation, seeking justice and climate adaptation.

This event is co-sponsored by the Institute of Caribbean Studies/Instituto de Estudios del Caribe, CRIIAS (Centro de Recursos de Investigación Interdisciplinaria y Aprendizaje Subgraduado), and the School of Social Sciences at UPR-RP.
