By Horace Palacio: As Belize prepares to celebrate its 44th Independence Day tomorrow, we do so with our heads held high and our hearts full of pride. For decades, Guatemala’s unfounded territorial claim has hovered like a shadow over our sovereignty. But today, that shadow grows weaker, because Belize has a strong case before the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
The facts are clear. Our borders are not only defined by history, but also enshrined in international law and recognized by the global community. The 1859 Treaty stands as a binding agreement, and Guatemala’s attempts to twist its meaning have failed in the court of reason and in the eyes of the world.
What does this mean for us? It means that when the ICJ delivers its ruling, Belizeans everywhere can stand firm knowing that our territorial integrity is secure, our sovereignty is unquestionable, and our future is bright.
As we raise the flag tomorrow on Independence Day, let us remember: we are not a people defined by threats or claims. We are a proud nation built on resilience, freedom, and an unshakable belief in our right to exist within the borders we have always called home.
Belize at 44 is not just celebrating independence, it is celebrating a victory of identity, unity, and international justice. The world will see that Belize is here to stay.
