By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 34-year-old Middlesex Village man has been convicted of possession of a controlled drug with intent to supply and possession of a firearm while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Albert Barrington Cassasola, an auto dealer and the husband of the Middlesex Village chairlady, appeared unrepresented before Senior Magistrate Mannon Dennison in the Dangriga Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, July 7, where he pleaded guilty to both charges.
Cassasola was fined $5,000, plus $5 cost of court, after pleading guilty to possession of 258.47 grams (over 9 ounces) of cannabis with intent to supply. He has until October 31, 2026, to pay the fine, in default of which he will serve one year in prison.
He was remanded to the Belize Central Prison pending sentencing on the charge of possessing a firearm while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Sentencing is scheduled for September 15, 2026.
The charges arose from an incident early Monday morning, July 6, after police received a report of shots being fired in the Mile 24 area of the Hummingbird Highway.
Police responding to the report encountered a group of people socializing near a bus shed. Officers alleged that Cassasola was holding what appeared to be a firearm and placed it into his pocket when he saw the police vehicle approaching.
A search reportedly led to the discovery of an army green Canik Mete MC9 firearm. Police said Cassasola appeared to be under the influence of alcohol at the time. He reportedly informed officers that he was a licensed firearm holder and produced a valid licence from his vehicle.
Police said that while checking the vehicle, officers detected the smell of marijuana and subsequently found two packages containing suspected cannabis. Cassasola was taken to the Dangriga Police Station and later charged.
During his court appearance, Cassasola expressed remorse and reportedly told the court that he was ashamed of his actions and felt he had brought shame upon his wife, who serves as chairperson of Middlesex Village.
