By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 41-year-old construction worker has been fined in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court after pleading guilty to damaging a window at a house rented by his wife.
Carlos Alvarez, of Belize City, appeared before a Senior Magistrate in Court #2 at around 2:00 p.m. Wednesday afternoon where he was read a single charge of damage to property.
Alvarez wasted no time and pleaded guilty to the charge.
The court heard that on Friday, February 27, 2026, at Douglas Jones Street in Belize City, Alvarez damaged a white hurricane window belonging to his wife, 42-year-old Irma Gutierrez, a self-employed Guatemalan national. The window was valued at $300.
According to police reports, Gutierrez had left her home secured earlier that day to travel to Ladyville. At around 6:50 p.m., while she was still in Ladyville, a neighbor sent her a voice message informing her that Alvarez was attempting to enter the house and had damaged one of the window louvers in the process.
Gutierrez later returned home and observed that the window had been broken. She reported the incident to the Gender Based Violence Responsive and Investigative Unit on Monday, March 2, and requested court action. She told police the window was valued at $300 and that it cost her $100 in labor to repair it.
In court, Alvarez apologized for his actions and asked the court for permission to repay his wife for the damaged window.
While no compensation order was made, the Senior Magistrate fined Alvarez $300 plus $5 cost of court, in default three months imprisonment.
He has until May 29, 2026, to pay the fine.
