By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): The National Hurricane Center (NHC) reports that Hurricane Melissa continues to rage south of Jamaica, maintaining Category 4 strength with maximum sustained winds near 140 mph as it lashes the island with torrential rain, powerful winds, and dangerous storm surge.
At 8:00 a.m. on Sunday, October 26, the storm was located about 100 miles south-southeast of Kingston, Jamaica, moving slowly westward at 5 mph. The NHC warns that Melissa poses a life-threatening situation for parts of Jamaica and southern Haiti, where flooding and landslides are already being reported.
Forecaster Kelly from the National Hurricane Center said Melissa continues to dominate the Caribbean weather pattern, but the rest of the Atlantic Basin remains quiet for now.
“The National Hurricane Center is issuing advisories on Hurricane Melissa, located a little more than 100 miles south-southeast of Jamaica. Tropical cyclone formation is not expected during the next seven days,” the statement read.
Melissa’s slow forward speed means Jamaica will endure prolonged heavy rainfall and hurricane-force winds into Monday. Officials in Kingston have urged residents in low-lying and coastal areas to move to higher ground as the storm continues to batter the island.
Despite the storm’s power, Belize remains in no immediate danger. The National Meteorological Service continues to closely monitor the hurricane’s movement, emphasizing that Melissa poses no threat to Belize or mainland Central America at this time.
Forecasters expect no new tropical cyclone formation in the Atlantic, Caribbean Sea, or Gulf of Mexico during the next week, providing a brief pause in what has been a highly active hurricane season.
