Hurricane Melissa makes landfall in Jamaica; hurricane center warns “This is an extremely dangerous and life-threatening situation!”

By Zoila Palma:  Hurricane Melissa has made landfall in northwestern Jamaica as a powerful Category 4 storm, bringing catastrophic winds, torrential rainfall, and dangerous storm surges across large portions of the island.

Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center (NHC) have warned residents that the situation remains extremely dangerous and life-threatening, urging everyone to stay indoors and avoid travel until conditions improve.

“To protect yourself from wind, the best thing you can do is put as many walls as possible between you and the outside. An interior room without windows, ideally one where you can also avoid falling trees, is the safest place you can be in a building. You can cover yourself with a mattress and wear a helmet for added protection,” NHC urged.

Melissa continues to produce sustained winds exceeding 130 miles per hour (215 km/h), toppling trees, downing power lines, and severely damaging homes and infrastructure. Flash flooding has been reported in several parishes, with coastal areas facing significant inundation from storm surges.

As Hurricane Melissa continues to churn over Jamaica, forecasters warn that conditions could worsen overnight before the storm gradually moves northwestward.

Regional governments and international partners are closely monitoring the situation, preparing to assist Jamaica with relief and recovery efforts.
