By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Hurricane Melissa has exploded into a Category 5 hurricane, unleashing catastrophic winds and torrential rain as it bears down on Jamaica. The storm, packing sustained winds of 160 mph (260 km/h), is the strongest hurricane to threaten the island in recent history.
At 5:00 a.m., Melissa was located 130 miles south-southwest of Kingston, Jamaica, and moving slowly west at just 3 mph. The U.S. National Hurricane Center warned that Melissa could dump up to 40 inches of rain on parts of eastern Jamaica, triggering life-threatening floods and landslides.
Officials have urged residents to evacuate low-lying areas as a storm surge up to 13 feet is expected along Jamaica’s southern coast. “Do not gamble with Melissa. It’s not a safe bet,” warned Desmond McKenzie, Jamaica’s Disaster Risk Management Council deputy chair.
Belize’s National Meteorological Service continues to monitor the system closely but confirmed that Melissa poses no direct threat to Belize at this time.
