By Zoila Palma: Hurricane Gabrielle is moving east-northeastward across the North Atlantic as a powerful Category 4 storm, prompting a hurricane watch for the Azores.
As of 11 a.m. AST, the storm was located about 390 miles east-northeast of Bermuda with maximum sustained winds near 140 mph.
While Gabrielle is expected to gradually weaken over the coming days, forecasters warn it will still pose significant threats as it approaches the Azores by Thursday.
The storm’s hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 40 miles from its center, while tropical-storm-force winds reach as far as 140 miles.
Meanwhile, meteorologists at the National Hurricane Center (NHC) are also monitoring two additional tropical systems in the Atlantic.
One tropical wave located less than 1,000 miles east of the Lesser Antilles is showing increasing signs of organization. Conditions are favorable for development, and a tropical depression is likely to form later this week as it moves west-northwestward. The National Hurricane Center has given the disturbance a 50 percent chance of development within 48 hours and a 90 percent chance within seven days.
A second tropical wave east of the Leeward Islands is producing heavy showers, thunderstorms, and gusty winds across the Windward and Leeward Islands.
The system is forecast to bring rainfall and gusty conditions to Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands tonight and into Wednesday.
As it moves northwestward later this week, it could strengthen near the Bahamas, where a tropical depression may form. The disturbance has a 20 percent chance of development within 48 hours and a 60 percent chance over the next week.
