By Zoila Palma: Hurricane Gabrielle is moving quickly across the subtropical Atlantic and is expected to impact the Azores by Thursday.
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) has issued a hurricane warning for the island chain.
As of 11 a.m. AST, Gabrielle was located near latitude 36.0 North and longitude 48.7 West, moving east-northeast at 25 mph (41 km/h). The storm is packing maximum sustained winds of 110 mph (175 km/h) with higher gusts. While some weakening is expected, Gabrielle is forecast to remain a hurricane as it passes over the Azores Thursday night into Friday.
Meanwhile, the NHC is monitoring two other weather systems in the Atlantic.
An elongated area of low pressure several hundred miles east of the Leeward Islands (AL93) has a 90% chance of developing into a tropical depression within 48 hours. Forecasters say conditions remain favorable for strengthening as it moves west-northwest, staying north of the Leeward Islands.
A second disturbance, a tropical wave moving through the eastern Caribbean Sea (AL94), is producing disorganized showers and storms.
Heavy rainfall and gusty winds are expected in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands today, and in the Dominican Republic by tonight.
The system could strengthen into a tropical depression later this week near the Bahamas, with formation chances at 80% over the next seven days.
