Posted: Monday, August 18, 2025. 11:32 am CST.

By Zoila Palma:  Hurricane Erin has intensified into a Category 4 storm and is expected to grow even larger as it moves across the Atlantic, prompting warnings and watches for parts of the Caribbean.

At 11:00 AM EDT, the center of Erin was located near 23.1° North latitude and 70.8° West longitude, approximately 110 miles (180 km) north of Grand Turk Island and 880 miles (1,420 km) south-southeast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina.

The storm is moving west-northwest at 10 mph (17 km/h), with a projected turn to the northwest later today and a shift northward by Tuesday.

Forecasters expect the core of Erin to pass east of the southeastern Bahamas today and travel between Bermuda and the U.S. East Coast by midweek.

Maximum sustained winds have reached 140 mph, with higher gusts.

Hurricane-force winds extend up to 80 miles from the center, while tropical-storm-force winds reach up to 230 miles.

Forecasters warn that some additional strengthening is possible, and Erin is expected to remain a dangerous major hurricane through the middle of this week.

A Tropical Storm Warning is currently in effect for the Turks and Caicos Islands and the southeastern Bahamas, while a Tropical Storm Watch covers the central Bahamas.

Outer bands of the hurricane are expected to produce heavy rainfall across portions of Hispaniola today and through Tuesday for the Turks and Caicos and eastern Bahamas, including San Salvador Island, with 2 to 4 inches of rain possible and localized totals reaching up to 6 inches.

Residents in affected areas are urged to monitor updates closely, secure property, and follow instructions from local authorities as Hurricane Erin continues its dangerous approach.
