By Zoila Palma: Weather experts at the National Hurricane Center (NHC) are closely monitoring Hurricane Erin and three more disturbances in the Atlantic.
Hurricane Erin continues to churn off the U.S. East Coast as a strong Category 2 storm, with maximum sustained winds near 105 mph and higher gusts.
As of 8 a.m. EDT Thursday, Erin was located about 34.8°N, 71.8°W, moving north-northeast at 17 mph.
The storm is forecast to shift northeast later today and accelerate east-northeast into the weekend, passing between the East Coast and Bermuda before moving south of Atlantic Canada. Forecasters expect Erin to weaken gradually and transition into a post-tropical system by Saturday.
The storm remains large, with hurricane-force winds extending 105 miles from its center and tropical-storm-force winds stretching outward up to 320 miles.
The National Hurricane Center has warned of dangerous surf, rip currents, and coastal flooding along much of the U.S. East Coast and Bermuda.
Meanwhile, forecasters are closely monitoring three other disturbances in the Atlantic Basin.
A tropical wave east of the Leeward Islands is likely to strengthen into a tropical depression this weekend, with a 70 percent chance of development within seven days.
Another system west of the Cabo Verde Islands shows moderate chances of short-lived development before conditions deteriorate, while a small low-pressure system southwest of the Azores has only a 30 percent chance of strengthening.
Meteorologists say the activity signals a busy stretch in the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season.
