By Zoila Palma: Hurricane Erin is expected to grow even larger this week as it moves over the western Atlantic, with forecasters warning of dangerous rip currents along much of the U.S. East Coast.
As of 8 a.m. today, the storm’s center was located about 665 miles southwest of Bermuda and 720 miles south-southeast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina.
Erin is moving northwest at around 7 mph but is forecast to shift north-northwest today, then turn north on Wednesday and northeast by Thursday.
On its projected path, the hurricane will pass east of the Bahamas before moving between Bermuda and the U.S. East Coast midweek.
Erin is currently packing maximum sustained winds near 110 mph with higher gusts, making it a powerful Category 2 hurricane.
Hurricane-force winds extend 80 miles from its center, while tropical-storm-force winds reach outward up to 205 miles.
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) noted that Erin’s size and intensity could cause significant hazards even far from its core.
Outer rain bands are already bringing heavy rainfall to the Turks and Caicos and parts of the Bahamas, with totals of up to 8 inches possible in some areas, raising the risk of flash flooding.
Tropical storm conditions are expected to persist for several more hours across the Turks and Caicos and southeastern Bahamas, and may develop in the central Bahamas later today.
Forecasters also warn that the Outer Banks of North Carolina could see heavy rain and tropical storm conditions as early as Wednesday night into Thursday.
