By Horace Palacio: The National Meteorological Service of Belize and the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) have issued an urgent advisory as Hurricane Beryl approaches the Yucatan Peninsula. Although a direct landfall on Belize is unlikely, the storm is expected to bring significant rainfall, potential flooding, and gusty winds to the country.

As of 3:00 AM on Thursday, July 4th, Hurricane Beryl was located approximately 485 miles east of Corozal Town, moving west-northwest at 20 mph with maximum sustained winds of 120 mph. The hurricane is anticipated to make landfall on the Yucatan Peninsula tonight or early Friday morning.

While Belize may be spared a direct hit, the storm’s outer bands are expected to unleash moderate to heavy rainfall across the country, with totals ranging from 4 to 6 inches and potentially higher in some areas. This deluge of rain poses a significant risk of flooding, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone regions where the soil is already saturated.

Northern districts, including Corozal and Orange Walk, as well as the islands of Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker, are under a Tropical Storm Watch. Residents in these areas are urged to be vigilant and prepared for potential impacts, including gusty winds, strong thunderstorms, and rough sea conditions.

NEMO has updated its directives in response to the latest advisory. Businesses and government offices in the Belize District will remain open on Thursday, July 4th. However, residents are advised to put their emergency plans into action, check supplies, and be ready to relocate if necessary.

Shelters have been identified in Corozal, Orange Walk, and San Pedro Town and will open if needed. Municipalities and the public are encouraged to continue clearing drains to mitigate flooding risks.

NEMO emphasizes the importance of staying informed and following official updates from the Meteorological Service and NEMO. All NEMO district emergency operations centers remain activated, and the public is urged to report any suspicious calls claiming to be from NEMO to the hotline at 936.

Residents are advised to remain alert, be prepared, and prioritize safety as Hurricane Beryl continues its path.
