By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Belizeans have come together to launch a humanitarian appeal to support the people of Cuba, following a series of devastating events, including widespread blackouts, multiple hurricanes, and an earthquake.
The country’s electrical grid collapsed on 18 October, leaving the nation of 10 million people without power.
This has been compounded by the recent impacts of Hurricane Oscar (20 October), Hurricane Rafael (6 November), and a 10 November earthquake, all of which have caused extensive damage.
The appeal, which runs from 12 November to 13 December 2024, is backed by prominent Belizean figures such as former Prime Ministers Said Musa and Dean Barrow.
Cuba has long faced significant challenges due to the ongoing US economic blockade, which has severely limited its ability to maintain or upgrade vital infrastructure.
The country’s electrical grid failure is a direct consequence of decades of strained relations, with the US placing Cuba on its list of state sponsors of terrorism.
The recent natural disasters, coupled with the electrical crisis, have further exacerbated the daily hardships faced by the Cuban population, severely impacting both the economy and quality of life.
Belizeans are encouraged to show solidarity by contributing financial donations or in-kind goods to help provide essential supplies, such as non-perishable food, medicines, and building materials.
Financial donations can be made to the Cuba Humanitarian Disaster Fund via accounts at Atlantic Bank and Heritage Bank in Belize City.
Donations of material goods can be dropped off at Mel’s Chiropractic Healing and Therapy in Belize City.
The appeal emphasizes the importance of supporting Cuba, recalling the island nation’s long-standing contributions to Belize in areas such as health, education, and sports.
