By Zoila Palma: Human Rights Day 2025 is observed on 10 December under the theme “Human Rights, Our Everyday Essentials,” a message aimed at reaffirming the universal values that protect people in an increasingly uncertain world.
The United Nations note that the theme responds to rising global insecurity and social fragmentation, reminding the public that human rights are not abstract ideals but the basic protections that shape daily life.
The campaign seeks to re-engage communities by highlighting how these rights—often taken for granted—guide access to justice, equality, safety, and dignity.
This year’s commemoration also underscores the enduring significance of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on 10 December 1948.
Considered a landmark achievement, the Declaration established, for the first time, a common global standard of fundamental freedoms owed to every person, regardless of race, religion, gender, nationality, or status.
Though not legally binding, the UDHR has inspired more than 60 international human rights instruments and remains a foundation for national laws and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. It is also the world’s most translated document, available in 577 languages.
Human Rights Day has been formally observed since 1950, following a UN resolution encouraging nations to mark the anniversary each year. Today, the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights continues to lead global efforts to raise awareness and promote the Declaration’s principles.
With the 2025 campaign emphasizing that human rights are attainable, essential, and universally relevant, officials hope the renewed focus will spark public engagement, boost confidence in human rights protections, and encourage collective action toward a more just and inclusive world.
