By Horace Palacio: A heated debate erupted in the House of Representatives on Friday as Hugo Patt, Area Representative for Corozal North, strongly criticized the government’s handling of road infrastructure projects in northern Belize. Patt, speaking during the loan motion debate, questioned why roads built to be “climate resilient” are still deteriorating at an alarming rate.
Patt pointed to Remate Road in Corozal North, arguing that it was built using substandard materials and is already falling apart within a year of construction. He dismissed government claims that excessive rainfall and droughts were to blame, stating that the real issue lies in poor road design and planning.
He also referenced concerns raised by Cayo South Representative and Minister of Infrastructure Development & Housing, Julius Espat, who noted that newly constructed roads in southern Belize are already showing defects. Patt warned that unless the government reassesses its approach, it will soon find itself securing new loans to repair what was already supposed to be fixed.
Patt further criticized the Ministry of Infrastructure Development, stating that despite previous complaints about the substandard quality of road construction, technical experts dismissed concerns, claiming everything was in order. He emphasized that taxpayers deserve long-lasting infrastructure, not roads that require constant repairs.
As Patt’s comments resonated within the chamber, they drew a strong reaction from Minister of Infrastructure Development, Julius Espat, who accused Patt of making baseless accusations and not working with engineers to address his concerns.
