By Aaron Humes: Friday’s agenda for the House of Representatives in Belmopan is packed with significant legislative matters, including the presentation of reports from select committees on various bills aimed at reforming the nation’s governance and legal framework.
Among the key pieces of legislation under consideration is the Central Bank of Belize Amendment Bill, 2025. This bill proposes amendments to the Central Bank Act to include the Director General of the Financial Services Commission on the Board, a move aimed at enhancing oversight of financial regulations.
Another important bill on the docket is the Bail Bill, 2025, designed to reform the existing bail framework within Belize’s criminal justice system. The proposed legislation seeks to address ongoing concerns regarding the equitable treatment of individuals awaiting trial.
The Law Revision (Law Reform) Bill, 2025, aims to establish an official Law Reform Commission that would oversee updates and improvements to existing laws.
Members of the House are also set to discuss the National Assembly (Powers, Privileges and Immunities) Bill, 2025, which will define the scope of powers and privileges afforded to members of the National Assembly, thereby reinforcing the institution’s integrity and independence.
In addition to the legislative bills, the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) Subscription Motion, 2025, will be introduced for approval. This motion seeks approval for Belize to subscribe to 4,000 shares in the bank at US$40 million. The proposal includes a Payable Capital of US$10 million, to be settled in four annual installments of US$2.5 million, while the remaining US$30 million will be designated as Callable Capital.
