By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Hopkins man working as a watchman on Turneffe Island was convicted in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court after police busted him with 108 grams of cannabis hidden in beer cans and cigarette boxes.
The accused, 40-year-old Lyndel Martinez, was charged with possession of a controlled drug with intent to supply after police discovered the marijuana packaged inside 25 beer cans and two Miami brand cigarette boxes during a checkpoint search at Manatee Lookout on September 17.
Martinez initially pleaded guilty to possession with intent to supply—a charge often treated as drug trafficking—but the prosecution accepted a plea to the lesser charge of possession simplicita since this was his first conviction for drugs.
Magistrate’s Court fined Martinez $500 plus $5 in court costs, giving him until December 15, 2025, to pay. In default, he will serve three months in prison.
Authorities noted that under the law, possession with intent to supply can carry penalties as high as $10,000 or up to three years’ imprisonment. Martinez, however, was spared the harsher punishment due to his status as a first-time offender.
