By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Honduras’ Independiente emerged as champions of the first-ever International Futsal Tournament held in Belize this past weekend (August 16-18-2024) at the Orange Walk Multi-Purpose Complex in Orange Walk Town.
Independiente defeated El Salvador’s Cojute 4-1 in the final to claim the international futsal trophy on Sunday. Belmopan Futsal edged Orange Walk Futsal for third place on accumulated goal average after the third-place match ended in a 4-4 draw.
Honduras’ César Suazo Lanza won the Most Valuable Player and Golden Boot awards. Independiente’s Eduardo Antonio Reyes was voted Best Goalkeeper.

On opening night Friday, Cojute edged Belmopan 10-9 in Group A, while Independiente dispatched Orange Walk 11-4 in Group B.
On Saturday evening, Cojute beat FC Fútbol RM 6-4, qualifying for the semifinals as the top of Group A. Belmopan then defeated Mexico’s FC Fútbol RM from Playa del Carmen 9-4, qualifying in second place.
In Group B, on Saturday evening, Independiente downed Guatemala’s San Jose 7-4, secured the top spot, and advanced to the semifinals. Orange Walk then dominated San Jose 8-2, finishing in second place and advancing to the semifinals.
In the semifinals, Independiente beat Belmopan 12-2, while Cojute took out Orange Walk 5-0.
